Vinyl: the value pick
Vinyl is the most-installed replacement window in North America for one simple reason — it delivers 85% of the performance at 60% of the cost of premium options. Modern multi-chamber vinyl frames insulate as well as most wood, never need painting, and won't rot.
Cost: $400–$800 per window installed
Lifespan: 20–30 years
Maintenance: essentially none
Weakness: fewer color options; can warp in extreme heat if low quality
Fiberglass: the long-play
Fiberglass frames expand and contract at nearly the same rate as the glass they hold, which means seals last longer and the whole assembly stays true across decades of temperature swings.
Cost: $700–$1,400 per window installed
Lifespan: 40–50 years
Maintenance: can be painted, holds up to any climate
Weakness: higher up-front cost, fewer manufacturers
The rule of thumb
Staying in your home 10 years or less? Vinyl. Forever home in a harsh climate? Fiberglass. Everything in between comes down to budget and how the frames look with your siding.
