What to Expect on Window Installation Day
A hour-by-hour walk-through so you know exactly what a professional install looks like. First-time window replacement is disruptive but manageable. Here's what a typical whole-house install day looks like when it's done right.

Before the crew arrives
Move furniture at least three feet away from every window. Take down blinds, curtains, and anything hanging on the wall within two feet of the frame. Pets should be in a closed room.
Hour 1–2: prep and demo
Drop cloths go down inside and out. The crew scores the old caulk, removes the sashes, and pries the old frame free. Expect noise and dust — this is the loudest part of the day.
Hour 2–5: install
The rough opening gets cleaned, flashed, and sealed. Each new window is set, shimmed, leveled, and fastened. A good crew tests operation before they move on — sash slides smoothly, locks engage, no gaps.
Hour 5–8: trim, caulk, cleanup
Interior and exterior trim goes on. Every seam gets caulked. Old windows and debris leave with the truck. A clean install site is a non-negotiable — if it doesn't look better than they found it, they weren't done.
"A whole-house install (8–12 windows) is a full day for a crew of three. If they promise it in four hours, ask what they're skipping."
